CHamoru is one of Gu\u00e5han\u2019s two official languages. \u202cAs such\u202d, \u202cit needs to be\u202d \u202crecognized and utilized as an equal medium of communication in the public sector\u202d. \u202cThe tedious but important work of translating written English into CHamoru text in alignment with our orthography is a key component of\u202d \u202cbuilding CHamoru literacy\u202d. \u202cThe Kumisi\u00f3n provides translations to the Governor\u2019s Office and the Guam Legislature when needed. \u202cNumerous other requests for\u202d \u202cassistance from both public and private entities and individuals are received daily\u202d. \u202cWhile we are not able to provide translations for all requests\u202d, \u202cthe Kumisi\u00f3n\u2019s Fino\u2019 Committee does engage regularly in providing assistance or referring interested parties to a list of Board vetted CHamoru translators\u202d. Classes were held at GCC. The grant funded 60 scholarships for four cohorts of teachers. The Kumisi\u00f3n has initiated a long-term project to collect and ortho\u202dgraphically align existing songs and prayers as language-learning tools. In order to maintain and perpetuate our indigenous language for future generations, we as a community must understand our current status. We need to know how many speakers we have representing different generations so that we can target our efforts strategically.<\/p> \u202cAs there are no standardized assessment tools currently in use\u202d to measure community fluency and proficiency, \u202cthe Kumisi\u00f3n sought funding from the Administration for Native Americans (ANA) to develop a Fluency and Proficiency Assessment tool for different age cohorts, across the language domains and for each of five levels of language capacity.
